"Love God and do as you please." That famous quote from St. Augustine has far outlived its author, but not everyone views it favorably. Some see his bluntness as irresponsible, possibly dangerous. But Augustine has solid ground to stand on. Thousands of years earlier, another theologian by the name of David said this, "Delight Yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart" (Ps. 37:4). Both are true. Watch, as John MacArthur explains...
This part of the Psalms has helped me do a lot more, not exactly the way I wanted it, but in the way that the Lord made it happen in my history. It is very true indeed that the Lord has given me all the desires of my heart although I do not always delight myself in him. I am still a rotten sinner, but he has manifested his everlasting forgiveness and gave me the grace to repent and convert daily. This I do: invoking his name daily and asking him to help me discern and do His will and not mine.
