Counted Righteous in Christ

Should We Abandon the Imputation of Christ's Righteousness?

Does Christ's life-long record of perfect obedience to God get "credited" to your account when you trust in Christ and are "justified" by God? This has been the historic Protestant understanding of the "imputation of Christ's righteousness," but John Piper warns that we are in danger of losing this doctrine today, because of attacks by scholars within the evangelical camp. In response, Piper shows, in careful treatment of passage after passage, that the imputation of Christ's righteousness to believers is clearly the teaching of the Bible, and if we abandon this doctrine we will also lose justification by faith alone. Bruce Ware: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Bruce Ware, a systematic theology professor at Southern Seminary, has written an outstanding book on the triune God we worship. This book covers some of the historical discussions on the Trinity, relevant biblical texts, and very helpful application.

D.A. Carson: Worship by the Book Carson's first chapter is easily worth the price of the book. Balanced, biblical, and challenging.

David Peterson: Engaging with God One of the best, if not the best, books on the biblical theology of worship.

Vaughan Roberts: True Worship This short (135 pg) book is a gem for helping us understand what we're actually doing when we meet on Sundays to worship God. Chapter 5 on "The Place of Music and Singing" is outstanding.

Joshua Harris: Stop Dating the Church You may be experiencing a "lack of commitment" in many areas of your life, but there's one area for Christians that shouldn't be affected: commitment to the church. Not convinced? Read this book.

Nancy Leigh DeMoss, editor: Biblical Womanhood in the Home (Foundations for the Family Series)

Nancy Leigh DeMoss, editor: Biblical Womanhood in the Home This book collects chapters from several leading women writers and teachers to address a wide array of topics concerning biblical womanhood. I'm partial to Carolyn Mahaney's two chapters on femininity and beauty, but I also highly recommend Nancy Leigh DeMoss's two chapters on the portraits of a wise and foolish woman.

Edward T. Welch: When People Are Big and God Is Small: Overcoming Peer Pressure, Codependency, and the Fear of Man (Resources for Changing Lives) Many battle fear, people-pleasing, jealousy, pride, and selfish ambition. This biblically based and very readable book will equip you for the fight.

Timothy S. Lane and Paul D. Tripp: How People Change This book helps Christians understand the roots of problems that are bearing bad fruit in their lives. Then it shows how the gospel can exchange bad roots for good roots--and good fruit. A gracious and encouraging book for anyone weary of trying to change through sheer willpower alone.

Tim Lane and Paul Tripp: Relationships: A Mess Worth Making The mess is because of our sin and self-centered drives. The worth comes from what God is doing among our relationships. There are so many excellent insights in this book--I recommend it for everyone. Though we tend to think romance when we hear the word "relationship," this book addresses a far broader scope with graciousness and biblical truth.

Gary & Betsy Ricucci: Love That Lasts: When Grace Meets Marriage This is the second edition of a book I first read as a new believer. It was the first book I ever read on marriage and its gracious and encouraging approach made an indelible mark. This revised edition is even meatier and more winsome than the first. Highly recommended for singles and marrieds alike.

C. J. Mahaney: Humility: True Greatness Applying the truths in this book will help you put pride to death and become the humble person to whom God looks. (Is. 66:2)

C.J. Mahaney: Living the Cross Centered Life This book combines two of CJ's previous books on the cross and adds new material. It will cause you to be amazed by the mercy, power, and glory of our Savior's sacrifice for us.

Paul Tripp: War of Words You know the old saying--women use WAY more words in any given day than men do. That's why this is a Must Read for every woman. The subtitle says it all: Getting to the Heart of Your Communication Struggles.

Paul Tripp: Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands Have you ever found yourself at a loss to try to help or counsel someone else? Have you been too critical? Too impatient? Too disinterested? This book shows people in need of change how to help people who need change. It's a roadmap for grace when sinners counsel other sinners.

Ken Sande: The Peacemaker When conflict arises in your life, do you ever see it as an opportunity to glorify God? You will after you read this book. Ken Sande provides clear, biblically-based thinking on conflict resolution.

Tedd Tripp: Shepherding A Child's Heart Every adult should read this book, but it's a Must for parents. So often in evangelism we encounter the erroneous understanding that God’s love triumphs over his righteousness and holiness. Instead, we read in the Scriptures that God’s love is characterized by holiness and in fact the cross of Jesus amplifies divine love and righteousness (Rom. 3.21-28). Reviews from Steve McCoy Ministry/Theology

Audition (Mars Hill Audio): Ken Myers in an NPR style commentary on culture and Christianity through Myers' commentary and interviews. This is a free spin-off of the Mars Hill Audio commentaries.

Catalyst: Covers both church leadership issues and cultural issues through interviewing Christian leaders, authors, pastors, etc. I really enjoy the Catalyst podcast, though I find myself skipping the first several minutes of pre-interview conversation about Catalyst Conference stuff and other random bits. The interview is the meat, and it's consistently thoughtful and engaging.

Church Leader Insights: Pastors Nelson Searcy and Kerrick Thomas of The Journey Church in NYC talking together about church leadership, church growth, church planting, systems, evangelism, etc. A lot of info of what has and hasn't worked for them. I always come away with insights for pastoring and ministry, even if you don't approach ministry in quite the same way as these guys.

Covenant Worldwide: At least 15 free seminary classes are available on the topics of biblical theology, OT and NT, apologetics and outreach, the Reformation, life and letters of Paul, and more. What the heck are you waiting for?

Fermi Project: Discussions with leaders on culture, the future, the Church and the Gospel. It's hosted by Catalyst guys Gabe Lyons and Andy Crouch. It's only on episode three, but I've enjoyed it tremendously so far. A great, concise podcast. Internet Monk Radio: Michael Spencer's thoughts on theology, ministry, his critics, yadda. The worst aspect of this podcast is his love affair for the Cincinnati Reds. Yuck. But if you can get past that, Spencer can often deliver thoughtful insights on a variety of issues. Warning: If you don't know Spencer and his online writings, some of this won't make much sense. It's for the devoted.

National New Church Conference: Interviews with conference speakers dealing with church and church planting. Have learned a lot from this podcast and highly recommend it for church leaders.

Practically Speaking: North Point boys (Andy Stanley, et al) on the Seven Practices of Effective Ministry. It's a "dead" podcast in that there are no new episodes, but their seven podcasts I have found very helpful as a pastor. I've listened to them more than once, and will listen again.

Resurgence: Mark Driscoll's missional resource that includes talks from various conferences and lectures pertaining to ministry and theology. Lots of good stuff here.

Preaching

Capitol Hill Baptist: Pastor Mark Dever is one of the most important living Southern Baptist pastors/preachers, and a pastor who I have had a chance to talk with a bit. He has seen a remarkable change over the years of his church in D.C. Dever is obsessively expository in his approach. If you want to know the Bible, this is a great way to digest it. Dever is also well known for tackling very large sections of text, including single sermons on entire books of the Bible.

Cornerstone Simi: Pastor Francis Chan is fairly new on my radar, but I have enjoyed what I have heard so far.

The Journey - St. Louis: Pastor Darrin Patrick is a friend and has seen some great things happen after planting in St. Louis. A good preacher, and a young leader worth watching.

Mars Hill Church, Grand Rapids: Pastor Rob Bell is a controversial writer and speaker in the emerging church movement. I find him very engaging and biblical, though we would surely differ at points. He challenges me with living the Gospel.

Mars Hill Church, Seattle: Pastor Mark Driscoll is a different sort of controversial writer and speaker in the emerging church movement. He has been very influential in my ministry and life.

Village Church: Pastor Matt Chandler is SBC, Acts 29, and one of the best young preachers I've heard. Probably my favorite younger preacher to listen to over the last few months. Some people trip over a few of his stylistic traits at first, but please persist and you will find so much worth hearing.
