Amusing ourselves to Death in a time of mourning

By Ingrid Schlueter @ http://www.sliceoflaodicea.com/

In light of what has just occured at their church, one would think that Ted Haggard's New Life Church would cancel their "Thou Shalt Laugh" Comedy Night this Saturday as promoted on their home page. It is interesting that the lawlessness of their pastor has made international headlines while their church members are commanded to laugh while being entertained by a nationally famous comedian. I would suggest that sackcloth and ashes would be more in order. While they're at it they should cancel their Christmas "Wonderland" extravaganza which they began planning for in October.

... October 15, at 2 p.m. in the Worship Center we will be having our Wonderland kick-off meeting for all dancers, actors, seamstresses, construction workers, welders, make-up artists, stage hands, riggers, box office volunteers and anyone else who would love to jump in and help with Wonderland!

This is the heart of the problem, friends. Laugh-ins, Christmas holiday blow-outs with dancers and actors and box-office tickets and entertainment are the current business of the church. We have forgotten to be sober, vigilant and watchful, as Scripture enjoins. Look at the results. As unprofitable servants, Christians today busy themselves with worthless entertainment and activities while the enemy eats like a cancer through the vital organs of the church. The enemy is devouring evangelical pastors and leaders in front of our eyes. If this isn't a time for the cancellation of festivities and a call to earnest prayer, nothing is. Take down the garland, cancel the laugh-in, forget praying about dominion and praying down principalities over whole nations as Haggard's World Prayer Center promotes. It's time for personal contrition and repentance. Rather than the sounds of laughter in God's house, we should hear the sound of weeping.
