Has anyone else noticed that Christianity Today, once the flagship magazine of evangelicalism, has been gradually selling out to the Emergent/post-modern heresy? While the magazine does strive to present a variety of perspectives (including anti-Emergent ones), those perspectives seem to be narrowing to an all-out endorsement of the anti-evangelical, anti-absolute truth, anti-doctrinal fad that is sweeping blogs and coffee houses.
Consider some recent articles, such as this piece about Donald Miller, in which the author tells us that "truth is rooted in story, not in rational systems." Then there is this gem by CT managing editor Mark Galli, who calls the "quest for objective truth" "sub-Christian" and writes that Jesus demands "irrational loyalty." The strongest testament to CT's Emergent leanings is the existence of the Out of Ur blog.
With so many articles about the new (or not so new) religious sensibilities turning the church on its head, CT gives the impression that Emergent thought has conquered Christianity. In the real world, I rarely come across believers who even know what "Emergent" means. That could change, though, thanks to publications like CT. The movement does have some appealing aspects: it asks the right questions and speaks the language of the culture. Too bad that more often than not, it gives the wrong answers and becomes indistinguishable from the culture.
