Emergents have a problem with picking up a Bible and reading the Word. They believe that in these "postmodern" times people need to process the "narrative" of Scripture differently. Now there is a website called Hear the Voice and they have retold the Bible in videos, music and so forth. (Click on "The Idea" in the left hand column to see what it's all about. ) We're told that today people can't process propositional truth. We have to have a story, a narrative and it has to be told in all kinds of interesting ways. That's why emerging churches don't like preachers, they like little stations where you can do playdough creations and you can finger paint and dance and sculpt scenes from your favorite Bible narrative--all this in the name of church. It's ironic that so many emergents write books. Shouldn't we be experiencing these beliefs rather than reading about them? Can't McLaren and Bell and others tell it in a narrative? The written word isn't supposed to work in postmodern times when we're talking about the Bible, but Brian McLaren and company sure write an awful lot of books anyway.
