Blessed are the Persecuted-IDOP 2006

Daily in over 60 countries Christians face imprisonment, torture and even death simply
because of their Christian faith. Jesus calls them blessed, and He calls us to pray for them.

This November, during the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, Christians in 130 countries around the world will be bound together in prayer for our persecuted brothers and sisters. In Canada, prayers will be lifted up especially for Christians in:

Belarus, where a new religion law, considered "the most repressive law in Europe,"
outlaws all unregistered religious activity. Authorities use the law to repress Christians
and to arrest and try church leaders.

India, where despite constitutionally guaranteed religious freedom, several states have
passed anti-conversion laws. These are often abused and lead to increased violence
against Christians and the destruction of churches.

Israel/West Bank and Gaza where deep religious and political tensions are
intensifying. In Israel, Christians face persistent discrimination, including violent
attacks and vandalism of churches. In West Bank and Gaza, new converts face
tremendous social pressure and intimidation from Islamic groups.

Uzbekistan where religious communities are required to register with the state and
where evangelism and religious teaching are forbidden. Authorities often harass
Christians; police make unannounced visits to churches, closing those which cannot
immediately produce their registration papers.
